Best time of year to visit
February through May. St. Croix sits south of the main hurricane belt, runs drier than St. Thomas and St. John, and the humidity is noticeably gentler. February has the breeziest weather of the year.
When the crowds thin out
Almost always. St. Croix is the quietest of the three USVI islands — even peak season feels relaxed. Tuesday through Thursday in any month is essentially empty.
What you'll eat and drink
Pâtés (savory hand pies stuffed with saltfish, beef or chicken), johnnycakes, and fungi — a cornmeal-and-okra side dish, not a mushroom. Tour the Cruzan Rum distillery in Frederiksted and taste why it's the local pour across the USVI. Don't leave without trying maubi, a fermented tree-bark drink that's an acquired-but-worth-it taste.
The vibe
Two historic towns — Christiansted and Frederiksted — with Danish colonial architecture in pastel yellows and reds. Working farms, art galleries, and Buck Island Reef just offshore (a national monument you only reach by boat, with snorkel trails along a coral wall). St. Croix is the USVI island repeat Caribbean travelers fall hardest for. Slower, more local, more lived-in.

Repeat Caribbean travelers, history buffs, divers and snorkelers, and anyone who'd rather have a long lunch with the chef than a buffet line.
