Best time of year to visit
Mid-March through early June. Water clarity is at its absolute best, humidity is still manageable, and you've slipped past the February cruise-ship peak. November is also lovely if you're willing to take a small hurricane-season risk for lower rates.
When the crowds thin out
Late April, May, and early June. On St. Thomas, skip Charlotte Amalie entirely on days when multiple ships are in port — check the cruise schedule before you book a town day. St. John is always quieter; if a beach feels busy, drive ten more minutes.
What you'll eat and drink
Conch fritters, johnnycakes (lightly sweet fried dough), fresh mahi or wahoo, and kallaloo — a leafy island stew with okra and crab or pork. The Painkiller (dark rum, pineapple, orange and cream of coconut with fresh nutmeg on top) is the unofficial drink. Cruzan Rum is distilled on neighboring St. Croix.
The vibe
St. Thomas is busier — duty-free shopping in Charlotte Amalie, big resorts, easy access to Magens Bay. St. John is the opposite: two-thirds of the island is Virgin Islands National Park, undeveloped, and the beaches just keep coming (Trunk Bay, Maho, Cinnamon, Hawksnest). A short ferry between them means you don't have to choose. Bring reef-safe sunscreen — it's actually required by law.

Travelers who want a mix of comfort and nature, couples celebrating something, snorkelers, and anyone who likes the idea of a national park beach with no entry fee.
