Best time of year to visit
April through early June, and again in September and October. You skip the heaviest winter rains on the north shore, miss the summer family-travel peak, and catch the best ocean conditions for a Nā Pali Coast boat or helicopter tour.
When the crowds thin out
Mid-April through mid-May and the first two weeks of October. Avoid the December–March whale-watching peak if quiet matters more to you than seeing humpbacks (though the whales are extraordinary).
What you'll eat and drink
Plate lunch (kalua pork, mac salad and rice), poke bowls, fresh ahi, malasadas (Portuguese donuts), and shave ice with Kauai-grown fruit syrups. Kauai Coffee is the largest coffee farm in the U.S. — tour it. For drinks, mai tais made with Koloa Rum (distilled on island) and POG (passion-orange-guava) juice.
The vibe
By state law, no building on Kauai can be taller than a coconut tree. The whole island has one main road that doesn't quite finish a loop — the Nā Pali Coast cliffs are too dramatic for asphalt, which is why you see them by boat, helicopter or a serious hike. The north shore (Hanalei, Princeville) is lush, rainy and quiet. The south shore (Poipu) is sunnier and slightly more developed. Both feel a world away from Waikiki.
