Passport & Documents

Get your documents handled before you start planning.

A trip is only as on-time as your paperwork. Here's what to check, when to renew, and where to do it.

Passports

  • Most countries require six months of validity beyond your return date. Check yours before booking international travel.
  • Routine processing currently runs 6–8 weeks.
  • Expedited processing currently runs 2–3 weeks (extra fee).
  • For travel inside two weeks, life-or-death emergencies and limited "urgent travel" appointments are available at passport agencies.
  • Apply or renew at travel.state.gov/passports.

REAL ID for domestic flights

A REAL ID-compliant driver's license (or a passport) is required to fly domestically. Look for the star in the upper corner of your license.

Trusted Traveler programs

  • TSA PreCheck — faster domestic security lanes. Apply.
  • Global Entry — fast-track US re-entry from abroad, includes TSA PreCheck. Apply.

Visas & entry requirements

Some destinations require a visa or electronic travel authorization (UK ETA, EU ETIAS launching, Australia ETA, etc.). We'll flag what's required when we plan your trip, but you can always check at travel.state.gov.

Health & CDC info

Check the CDC destination pages for vaccine recommendations and health advisories: CDC Travelers' Health.
