Best time of year to visit
April through early June and again from September through mid-November. You miss spring break, the summer family rush, and winter holiday pricing. Whale-watching peaks January through March if that's why you're going.
When the crowds thin out
Mid-April through May and the first three weeks of November are noticeably calmer at the resorts and on the Road to Hāna. Drive Hāna on a weekday and leave early — the road's narrow one-lane bridges back up by 10 a.m.
What you'll eat and drink
Banana bread from a roadside stand on the way to Hāna (Aunt Sandy's is the classic). Maui Gold pineapple, fresh poke, plate lunch, and shave ice. Upcountry has the only working winery in Hawaii (MauiWine) and a growing handful of distilleries and lavender farms. For dinner, fresh-caught opakapaka or ono.
The vibe
Three very different Mauis on one island. West and south Maui (Wailea, Kā'anapali) are polished resort coastlines. The Road to Hāna is the lush jungle drive — black sand beaches, waterfalls, bamboo forests, one-lane bridges. Upcountry, on the slopes of Haleakalā, is cool, quiet and ranching country — cowboy towns, lavender farms and a 10,000-foot volcano sunrise that's genuinely unforgettable.

First-time Hawaii travelers (you get the most variety on one island), honeymooners and anniversaries, multi-generation families, and anyone who wants a road trip with the windows down.
