A hometown warm-up for America's 250th
I drove west from Bismarck-Mandan to Medora expecting a nice summer weekend. I left thinking every North Dakotan should be here in 2026. The whole town is already leaning into America's 250th birthday — flags on every window, a "We the People" banner across the Medora Musical silos, and the badlands doing what they do best: making you feel small in the best possible way.
Why Medora, and why now
Medora is tiny — a few square blocks tucked under the bluffs of Theodore Roosevelt National Park — but it punches way above its weight. The 1924 Town Hall still anchors Main Street. The Rough Riders Hotel still serves a good breakfast. And in 2026, the town becomes one of the official stops on the America 250 celebration trail, with special programming layered onto everything Medora already does well.
What's different in 2026
- **America 250 Medora Musical** — the outdoor amphitheater show gets a semiquincentennial overlay. Same horses, same Burning Hills, new patriotic finale. - **We the People banner walk** — storefronts down Pacific Ave and Third Street are dressing up all season. It photographs beautifully at golden hour. - **Flag plaza at the Musical entrance** — North Dakota, US, and Medora Musical America 250 flags fly together over the donor wall. A quiet, moving spot most people walk right past. - **Theodore Roosevelt National Park** — no ticketed events, just the best backdrop in the state for a milestone birthday.
How I'd plan a 2026 trip
Two nights is the sweet spot. Arrive mid-afternoon, walk Main Street with an ice cream, catch the Musical after sunset. Full day two: national park in the morning (South Unit is right there), lunch in town, Bully Pulpit or the overlook trails in the afternoon, Pitchfork Steak Fondue before the show. Drive home day three with a stop in Dickinson.
Book early — this one will sell out
