Alaska from the Midwest

Alaska cruises planned for North Dakota travelers.

Flights, embarkation port choice, cabin level and shore excursions — everything that goes into making an Alaska cruise actually work when you're flying out of Bismarck, Fargo or Minneapolis.

Getting from ND to your ship

Most Alaska cruises sail from Seattle, Vancouver, or Whittier (Anchorage). From North Dakota, the two practical routings are:

  • Bismarck (BIS) → Seattle (SEA) via Delta/MSP or United/DEN. Usually one stop; total travel day around 5–7 hours.
  • Fargo (FAR) → Seattle with similar one-stop routing and often cheaper fares.
  • For Vancouver departures, fly into Seattle and we'll arrange a cruise-line shuttle north — it's smoother than connecting in YVR.

We always book travelers to arrive at least one day before embarkation. Weather delays out of MSP or DEN are real, and missing the ship is the one mistake you can't undo.

Best months to cruise Alaska

  • May & early June — fewer crowds, lower prices, drier weather, snow still on the peaks
  • Late June – July — warmest weather, peak wildlife, best for families with kids
  • August – September — best whale watching, salmon runs, northern lights possible on late sailings

Which cruise line fits you

  • Princess — most Alaska expertise, classic feel, great for first-timers
  • Holland America — slightly older crowd, excellent Glacier Bay access, strong shore excursion program
  • Norwegian — more casual, freestyle dining, good for multi-gen families
  • UnCruise / small ship — 30–80 passengers, gets into coves the big ships can't, premium pricing

Shore excursions worth the money

  • Juneau — Mendenhall Glacier + whale watching combo
  • Skagway — White Pass & Yukon Route Railway
  • Ketchikan — Misty Fjords floatplane (weather permitting)
  • Icy Strait Point — world's longest zipline if you want the adrenaline version
